Spain’s health minister has given more information after the country reported a suspected hantavirus case in Alicante (see 13:34 post).
Monica Garcia wrote that a person in Alicante has reported mild symptoms consistent with hantavirus and is being isolated while test samples are analysed.
Garcia also reveals that a second person spent a few days in Barcelona and has since returned to South Africa, with international coordination ongoing to locate them.
“We reiterate that the risk to the general population remains very low,” she said.
“Surveillance systems are functioning correctly, and we are in constant coordination with health authorities to respond to any potential risk situation.”
