Security Situation: Deadly Counterterrorism Operations in Balochistan
Pakistan’s security forces carried out major counterterrorism operations across the southwestern Balochistan province on Wednesday, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. According to the military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 54 terrorists were eliminated and 42 security personnel and civilians were killed in three major engagements over the past four days.
Speaking at a press briefing, ISPR Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the deadliest attack occurred along the N-25 highway, where militants belonging to the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked an army convoy, killing 11 soldiers. Security forces retaliated and killed 14 militants during the engagement.
In another incident, militants launched a “multidirectional attack” on a police checkpoint guarding a dam in Ziarat district. Police fought back, killing 15 militants before the attackers temporarily overran the post and took surviving personnel hostage. At least nine policemen were killed in the attack. Army and Frontier Corps reinforcements were immediately dispatched and launched operations in the mountainous area of Ziarat, where fighting continued.
On Wednesday, an intelligence-based operation was conducted on the N-25 Highway in Khuzdar district after authorities received intelligence that terrorists were extorting money from passengers and local residents. Security forces engaged the militants in a gun battle, killing at least 19 of them, while 11 security personnel lost their lives.
Following the attacks, security forces launched fresh intelligence-based operations in Kharan and Dalbandin districts, killing another 14 militants.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the security forces for eliminating 54 militants belonging to “Fitna al-Hindustan,” saying their timely action had thwarted the “nefarious designs” of India-sponsored militants. He paid tribute to the 42 security personnel and civilians who lost their lives, describing them as martyrs. Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti also issued a statement condemning the attacks as a “malicious conspiracy” aimed at undermining Pakistan’s peace and stability.
Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir said terrorism from across the border “will be crushed with the full force of the state” and that the armed forces are “fully aware of state-sponsored attempts by hostile intelligence agencies to destabilize Pakistan”.
The military spokesperson also alleged that Afghan territory is being used for terrorist activities against Pakistan.
Aviation Disaster: Navy Locates Wreckage of Missing Cargo Plane
Pakistan’s Navy on Wednesday located the wreckage of a missing K2 Airways cargo Boeing 737 aircraft in the Arabian Sea after a 12-hour search and rescue operation, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) said in a statement.
The wreckage was found about 53 nautical miles south of Ormara, a coastal town in Gwadar district of Balochistan province. Air and sea assets from the Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency were deployed in the operation. Search and rescue efforts are continuing to locate the five missing crew members.
The cargo aircraft was flying from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to Karachi when it went missing on Tuesday night after reporting a navigational system malfunction. According to the PAA, the aircraft was being guided by Karachi Area Control Center before it suddenly descended, changed heading sharply, and disappeared from radar and radio contact about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern and sorrow over the disappearance of the aircraft, extending heartfelt sympathies to the families of the crew members. Prime Minister Sharif directed the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, the Pakistan Navy, and the Pakistan Air Force to utilize all available resources and expedite the search and rescue operation.
