The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a masquerade following the killing of a 24-year-old man during a traditional procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan, the state capital.
The victim, identified as Sefiu Kehinde, reportedly sustained fatal injuries after he was allegedly attacked with axes and cutlasses by the masquerade, known as Asoleke, and several of his followers during Sunday’s parade. Police have also launched a manhunt for four additional suspects believed to have participated in the assault.
According to the police, the incident was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters after a relative of the deceased received a distress call informing the family of the attack.
Responding officers immediately arrived at the scene and rushed the victim to a hospital for emergency treatment, but he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“The victim was immediately evacuated to the Hospital for urgent medical attention, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty.”
Investigators processed the crime scene and documented relevant evidence before the victim’s family requested the release of his remains for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Police confirmed that the masquerade allegedly linked to the attack has been taken into custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend four other suspects who fled after the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
“The Command wishes to assure members of the public that efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining perpetrators.”
Authorities also reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, assuring residents that anyone found responsible for the killing would face the full weight of the law.
