North Korea carried out a “firepower attack drill” involving long-range artillery and missiles, according to state media reports on Monday (Sep 14). The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that the exercise was held on Saturday and included combined units from all levels of the Korean People’s Army.

South Korea had earlier reported that the North fired multiple ballistic missiles on Saturday from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. This occurred just one day after South Korea wrapped up five days of joint maritime drills with the United States and Japan, which were aimed at addressing the North.

The KCNA report did not specify the location of the drill, but noted that it employed “new combat systems such as attack drones of various kinds, tactical cruise missiles, large-caliber thermal-pressure multiple rocket launchers and tactical ballistic missiles.” According to KCNA, the weapons “demonstrated the huge destructive power of concentration fire by hitting the targets with 100 per cent hit accuracy.”
