Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., said Thursday on Newsmax’s “National Report” that there is “not a need for military action” in Cuba right now because “the country is falling apart” under the Castro regime.
“There’s not a need for military action, at least at this time in Cuba, simply because the country is falling apart,” Ogles said following the indictment of former Cuban President Raul Castro.
“I think the sanctions are working. They truly are at the breaking point.”
Still, Ogles said President Donald Trump is sending a strong message to hostile regimes after declining to fully rule out military action when questioned by reporters.
“I think what the president is doing here is sending a message that if you harm, attack, or kill Americans, whether you’re a brutal dictator or an ayatollah, we are coming for you,” Ogles said.
The Tennessee congressman warned that threats from Cuba cannot be ignored because of the island’s proximity to the United States.
“This idea that we’re going to sit passively by and allow you to operate off our shores and make threats like [Florida GOP Rep. Carlos] Gimenez says, 300 drones — this is something that has to be taken seriously,” he said.
“Cuba is falling apart. We’re not the ones that are starving Cubans. It’s the Cuban regime.”
Ogles said there is “an opportunity to get this dictator out of there and to, quite frankly, bring justice for the Americans who have been killed and for all of the Cubans who have suffered over the years because of this brutal dictatorship.”
He added that Cuba’s location presents a unique security concern.
“What makes Cuba different than, say, Venezuela or Ukraine or Iran is that they literally are at our doorstep, roughly 90 miles off the coast,” Ogles said.
“If they have weapons that could be used to attack whether it’s Miami or the [Florida] Panhandle, that’s something that we have to take seriously.”
Ogles also linked instability in Cuba to the broader immigration crisis affecting the United States.
“Part of it is to get rid of these dictators that are sending their worst criminals into our country and let them have their country back and have prosperity,” he said.
Describing conditions inside Cuba, Ogles said residents “only have electricity [for] two or three hours a day.”
“When you have a criminal like the Castro family that’s really ruled with an iron fist and brutalized the people since the ’60s, enough is enough,” Ogles said. “You killed Americans. We’re coming for you.”
