No initiative taken to join Abraham Accords: Pakistan’s defense minister

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said on Tuesday that Pakistan has neither taken any initiative nor received any proposal to join the Abraham Accords, reaffirming the country’s long-standing position on Israel.

The Abraham Accords are the U.S.-brokered agreements for Arab-Israeli ties normalization launched during Donald Trump’s first term.

“Basically, I don’t think we should be part of an accord that clashes with our fundamental principles. No initiative to join the Abraham Accords has been taken by us, nor has anyone asked us to do that,” Asif told a local TV channel while commenting on a post by U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social.

The U.S. president stated that countries engaged in discussions on the Iran crisis should also join the Abraham Accords, describing the approach as a step toward a more unified and economically integrated Middle East.

The minister said it was his personal opinion that the Gaza peace pact was being violated, raising concerns over trust and engagement.

Asif added that Pakistan has a “very clear stand” on the issue, saying it remains unacceptable for the country.

Pakistan and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations, and Pakistan has consistently maintained that it will not recognize Israel until a just and independent Palestinian state is established based on internationally agreed principles.
