While presenting the Appropriation Bill, President Muhammadu Buhari was shouted down with screams of “nooooo”, “nooooo”, “lieessss” when he started talking about the strides of his administration.
Local media reports confirm the shout was loudest when he said “the economy has recovered from recession”, and that Boko Haram had been degraded in the North-East.
According to Sahara Reporters, at some point, the President got visibly angry, abandoned his prepared speech, and told the lawmakers: “Distinguished members, let us conduct ourselves properly. The world is watching us; we are supposed to be above this.”
President Buhari’s experience in the house on Wednesday, during a joint session of the National Assembly, showed visible signs of disharmony, disrespect and rejection. He reportedly entered the National Assembly at about 12:40 pm and immediately set about the business of the day.
Buhari’s presentation of the 2019 appropriation bill was met with loud, dazing screams but his angry response brought some decorum which was short-lived. The boos echoed again, this time, nonstop, as Mr. President told tales of his government’s successful anti-corruption campaign.
As the speech wore on, though, his supporters made themselves heard as well, standing, clapping and cheering as he reeled off figures of infrastructural projects.
