The opening ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympics has been one for the books.
For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games — and despite the presence of heavy rain in Paris — the parade of nations took place outside, on a body of water, as compared to inside the Olympic Stadium (Stade de France for the 2024 Games). It has delivered some breathtaking scenes, as athletes and countries such as LeBron James and the United States cruised along the Seine River to formally kick off the Summer Games.
But NBC’s coverage crew of Mike Tirico, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and country music artist Kelly Clarkson has received mixed reactions for their coverage of the opening ceremony — with the latter two hosts receiving most of it.
Manning has put together an impressive broadcasting career for himself in retirement with his “Monday Night Football” ManningCast on ESPN. And he did receive some praise and laughs for bringing out a playbook wristband sleeve during the coverage — giving a glimpse into his football side.
As for Clarkson, who has her own daytime talk show on NBC, those on social media have pointed to her commenting on every single piece of the three-plus hour ceremony.
Due to the inclement weather, the trio has carried much of the bulk of NBC’s coverage as TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb have not been part of the network’s coverage since the opening hour of the ceremony. Both Guthrie and Kotb looked to have been stationed outside in Paris along the Seine while Trico, Manning and Clarkson are broadcasting from inside one of NBC’s on-site studios.
