Myanmar authorities seize over 60,000 kg of controlled chemicals

Myanmar police have seized over 60,000 kilograms of controlled chemicals in the central Mandalay region, according to the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the country’s anti-narcotics police raided a house in Kyaukse township of Mandalay on Aug. 13 and confiscated 60,000 kg of caustic soda and 4,500 kg of citric acid monohydrate, and arrested a suspect.

Following an investigation, another suspect connected to the chemicals was apprehended on Aug. 14 in Pyin Oo Lwin town of Mandalay.

The seized drugs had a street value of 293.4 million kyats (about 0.13 million U.S. dollars), the CCDAC said.

The two suspects have been charged under the law, and further investigations were underway.
