China has hit out at the UK government after ministers banned a Chinese energy firm from establishing an offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland.

Energy minister Michael Shanks confirmed in a written statement released yesterday that MingYang Smart Energy turbines cannot be used in UK waters because the “government’s view is that we cannot support the use of them”.

As we reported yesterday, the junior minister went on to cite how the government “will always act to protect our national security”, while insisting that government does “welcome investment from China where it’s in our national interest”.

It suggests a tone change from the government, which has made largely pro-China noises so far this year – capped by Sir Keir Starmer’s historic Beijing visit and the approval of a new ‘super-embassy’ in January. 

But now the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded, saying Chinese companies should “not be viewed as political and security issues”.

Asked about MingYang being blocked on national security grounds, a spokesperson replied: “China-UK economic, trade and green cooperation is in nature mutually beneficial. 

“Such cooperation should not be viewed as political and security issues. 

“It is hoped that the UK will provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business and investment environment for companies of all countries, including Chinese companies.”
