Military repels Zamfara terror assault, seizes large cache of weapons

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully thwarted a suspected terrorist attack in Zamfara State, neutralizing several insurgents and recovering a substantial haul of weapons and ammunition.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday in the Maradun Local Government Area, saw troops engage the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours. Military sources confirmed that the terrorists were attempting to overrun a community when security forces intercepted them.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, confirmed the development in a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday. He detailed the success of the operation and commended the troops for their bravery. “Troops responded swiftly to distress calls and engaged the terrorists in a firefight that forced them to retreat in disarray,” he stated. “The gallant soldiers successfully repelled the attack and pursued the fleeing insurgents into the surrounding bush.”

According to the statement, troops recovered an assortment of weapons from the fleeing terrorists, including AK-47 rifles, locally fabricated guns, and a significant quantity of ammunition. Several motorcycles used by the attackers were also destroyed during the operation. General Buba added: “The recovered items include six AK-47 rifles, three locally made guns, over 200 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and four motorcycles. Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining terrorists who escaped with gunshot wounds.”

The military spokesperson assured residents of the area that troops remain on high alert and are conducting clearance operations to prevent any further attacks. “We are not resting on our oars. Troops have been deployed to dominate the general area and deny the terrorists any freedom of action,” he emphasised. “The military is determined to sustain the momentum and ensure the safety of lives and property in Zamfara and other affected states.”

Local sources reported that the attack caused panic among villagers, many of whom fled their homes during the exchange of gunfire. However, calm has since returned to the area, and residents are gradually returning to their daily activities. One community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, praised the military’s swift response: “We are grateful to the soldiers. If they had not arrived when they did, the terrorists would have overrun our village. We pray for their continued protection as they fight to keep us safe.”

The latest operation is part of ongoing efforts by the military to curb banditry and terrorism in the North-West region. Zamfara has been one of the states hardest hit by insecurity, with frequent attacks on rural communities and kidnapping for ransom. General Buba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace: “The Nigerian military will continue to work tirelessly to rid the North-West of all forms of criminality. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.”

The recovered weapons have been taken to a military facility for further investigation, while troops maintain a strong presence in the area to forestall any reprisal attacks.
