The New York Mets are increasingly expected to offload several players before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline as the club attempts to reshape its roster following the dismissal of manager Carlos Mendoza.

The organization has endured a disappointing 2026 campaign despite entering the season with one of the league’s highest payrolls. After struggling to a 34-47 record and falling to the bottom of the National League East, the Mets relieved Mendoza of his duties and appointed Andy Green as interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Although speculation has intensified that New York could become a major seller at the trade deadline, club executives have insisted no final decision has been made. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has maintained that the managerial change is intended to spark a turnaround rather than signal a complete rebuild.

Stearns said:

“This is not about giving up on the season. We believe this team is capable of playing much better baseball.”

However, recent roster moves, including the trade of starting pitcher David Peterson, have fueled expectations that more experienced players could be moved if the team’s fortunes do not improve before the deadline. League executives believe the Mets will continue evaluating offers while monitoring their position in the playoff race.

Team owner Steve Cohen acknowledged the frustration surrounding the club’s performance and accepted responsibility for the disappointing campaign.

He said:

“Our fans deserve better.”

Cohen added that the organization remains committed to building a championship-calibre team despite the current setbacks.
