Real Madrid have lost the battle for Leroy Sane after Schalke announced their talented winger was very close to joining Manchester City.

Though Sane’s father claimed last month that Madrid were still a possible destination for his son, the statement sounds like an invalid one at this moment, as latest reports confirm Schalke have publicly revealed that a deal has been struck with the English Premier League side–Manchester City.

Schalke confirmed today that the 20-year-old is in Manchester to complete a transfer to City, worth a reported €36.5m.

Leroy Sane’s transfer to Manchester City from Schalke could end up costing the Premier League club as much as £42million. The initial fee is £37m but that may rise by up to £5m with add-ons over the course of his stay at the Etihad, Daily Mail reported.

The 20-year-old Germany international will undergo a medical in Manchester today after spending the night in a city center hotel.

Schalke have confirmed that the player flew to England to complete the deal instead of joining their training camp in Austria, and it is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

“Leroy Sane is currently in Manchester and will not be travelling with Schalke to the training camp,” the German club wrote on their official Twitter account.

Real Madrid lost out in the battle for Paul Pogba late last week, and now Sane. The news comes after it emerged Madrid had to sell before they could buy.

The truth remains, “Los Blancos may not really need an extra player at this time” as coach Zinedine Zidane stated earlier. They just won the Champions League and have world-class players who are still hungry for more.
