Man United face Fernandes transfer test as Galatasaray ‘prepare bid’

Turkish Süper Lig giants Galatasaray are preparing to test Manchester United’s resolve with a formal offer for captain Bruno Fernandes.

The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder has just one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford. A release clause of around €65 million, which had been written into his deal, recently expired. That, however, has not deterred the Istanbul club. According to reports, the Turkish champions are readying a €50 million bid to gauge United’s willingness to sell.

More surprisingly, Galatasaray are willing to double Fernandes’s current wages to lure him to Turkey. The club has reportedly offered the playmaker a lucrative €20 million (£17.1 million) per year contract, according to The Athletic.

Fernandes enjoyed a stellar campaign last season under Michael Carrick, breaking the Premier League single-season assist record with 21 assists and helping United finish third in the table. Carrick took over in January after Ruben Amorim was sacked.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United offered their captain a new contract back in May, but no agreement has been reached or announced since. Meanwhile, other clubs across Europe have also expressed interest in Fernandes. For now, however, he remains at Old Trafford.

PA Media reports that United will reject any offers for the No. 8 before the transfer deadline. The Red Devils open their Premier League campaign away at promoted Hull City, with Fernandes having returned to the squad after Portugal’s World Cup campaign, which ended in the round of 16.
