Man Killed by Tiger at UK Wildlife Park Named as William Chapman, Who Filmed Himself Approaching the Animal

The man who died after being mauled by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has been named as William Chapman, Meziesblog understands.

Videos posted on Chapman’s own social media, seen by Sky News, appear to show him filming himself approaching the animal shortly before the attack. In the footage, he seems to be moving towards a tiger lying on a wooden platform a few metres away. The person filming can be heard breathing heavily, while voices in the background shout “Oh my God” and “Are you serious?”

South Yorkshire Police confirmed earlier this week that he had been visiting the park alone on Saturday. Witnesses near the enclosure said people desperately shouted at Chapman to “play dead,” but he appeared not to understand. He was reportedly heard telling the tiger to “stop messing about.”

The park was evacuated on Saturday and remained closed on Tuesday for a fourth consecutive day. In a statement posted on social media on Saturday, the park said its “emergency response procedures were immediately activated.” A later statement said “very many people” had contacted them about the tiger, named Altai, confirming that it was “safe and well” and would not be euthanised.

Earlier this week, Doncaster Council said it had launched a health and safety investigation into the incident.
