Macron urges allies to ensure Russia doesn’t win

Macron: Placing Western troops on ground in Ukraine ‘not ruled out’

Emmanuel Macron has said there is no consensus on sending troops to Ukraine, but the prospect cannot be ruled out.

Speaking at a conference of 20 European leaders in Paris today, the French president said: “There is no consensus at this stage… to send troops on the ground.

“Nothing should be excluded. We will do everything that we
must so that Russia does not win.”

The French leader added that European countries had agreed to work on sanctioning countries that were helping Russia bypass its existing Ukraine-related sanctions.

He also said the consensus among European nations was that they should be prepared for a possible attack by Russia on them in coming years and that more efforts were needed to help Ukraine financially and militarily.

For context: Some 20 European leaders gathered in Paris today to send Vladimir Putin a message of European resolve on Ukraine and counter the Kremlin’s narrative that Russia is bound to win the war, which is now in its third year.

Ammunition supplies have become a critical issue for Kyiv.

The EU, though, is falling short of its target of sending Ukraine a million rounds of artillery shells by March.
