Keir Starmer rules out another election – as petition demanding rerun hits 2m signatures

Sir Keir Starmer appeared on ITV’s This Morning a short time ago to talk about his government’s plans to make drink spiking a specific criminal offence, and train thousands of bar staff to deal with it.

But he was also asked about a petition calling for another election on the parliament website, now signed by two million people.

The PM replied: “Look, I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election.

“I’m not surprised that many of them want a rerun. That isn’t how our system works.

“There will be plenty of people who didn’t want us in in the first place.

“So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day.”

‘That’s quite enough change for now, thank you’/ PA

Starmer: ‘Love Actually will be interesting this year’

Aside from serious questions over policy and his time so far in government, the prime minister is also asked about his favourite Christmas film now the season is upon us.

He quips that “Love Actually will be interesting this year” – a possible reference to the infamous scene where British PM Hugh Grant takes on his over-bearing US counterpart in a press conference speech that won hearts and minds.

Could Sir Keir be “prepared to be much stronger” over trade tariffs once president-elect Donald Trump is in the White House?
