Israel says 136 hostages are still held by Hamas in Gaza.

Biden calls Israeli military response ‘over the top’

Joe Biden has suggested Israel’s military response in Gaza has been “over the top”.

It is some of the sharpest criticism to date of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government by Israel’s closest ally.

“I’m of the view, as you know, that the conduct of the response in the Gaza Strip has been over the top,” the US president said.

“There are a lot of innocent people who are starving, a lot of innocent people who are in trouble and dying, and it’s gotta stop.”

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 27,800 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since 7 October.

Mr Biden said: “I’m pushing very hard now to deal with this hostage ceasefire.”

Israel says 136 hostages are still held by Hamas in Gaza.

His comments come after former secretary of state Hillary Clinton called on Mr Netanyahu to step down, saying he was “not a trustworthy leader”.
