Israel’s civil aviation chief complains main airport has become ‘US military base’
While we listen to Donald Trump’s White House briefing, discourse in Israel continues to be dominated by the impacts of conflict with Iran.
The country’s civil aviation said today that Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv had effectively become a “US military base”, causing problems for civilian flights and Israeli airlines.
Shmuel Zakay said military activity at Israel’s main international airport was causing flight delays and increasing ticket prices ahead of the summer tourism season, according to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
“Turning Ben Gurion International Airport into a military base harms the return of foreign airlines and threatens the financial stability of Israeli airlines,” he said.
“Ben Gurion Airport has become a military base with limited civilian activity.”
He said US aircraft should be moved from the airport to military bases, saying the current situation harms not only airlines but “all citizens of the country”.
