Israel has refused a request to bring food and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
The secretary general of its executive committee, Hussein Al-Sheikh, said people are facing “a major humanitarian catastrophe”.
He called on the international community for help.
“We call on the international humanitarian institutions and the international community to intervene urgently to stop the aggression, allow the entry of relief materials, and restore electricity and water, because the Gaza Strip is facing a major humanitarian catastrophe,” he said.
Yesterday, in response to the Hamas assault, Israel announced a siege of Gaza that would block all food, fuel, electricity and water to a strip of land occupied by around two million mainly young Palestinians. Gazans were already subject to severe restrictions of movement by Israel.
