Iran’s response to US peace plan expected later today

Donald Trump and White House officials have been told Iran’s counter-proposal to its peace plan will likely arrive later today, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters news agency.

The US sent a 15-point plan to Tehran to end the war earlier this week, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed at a cabinet meeting yesterday.

Iranian officials then described Trump’s demands as “excessive” and “not positive”.

 According to Iranian state media, Tehran set out five of its own conditions under which it would end the war:

  • halt to the “aggression and assassinations”;
  • Concrete mechanisms to ensure that Iran will not be attacked again;
  • Payment of war damages and reparations;
  • An end to the war across all fronts and for all resistance groups involved throughout the region;
  • International recognition and guarantees regarding Iran’s authority over the Strait of Hormuz.

There have previously been reports that Iran has already formally responded to the plan.
