Iranian president arrives in Pakistan for official visit

Iran’s president has arrived in the Pakistani capital for a three-day visit.

Major highways in Islamabad have been blocked as part of security measures for Ebrahim Raisi’s arrival, while the government declared a public holiday in Karachi.

The visit, which Pakistan’s foreign office said will run until Wednesday, comes as the two Muslim neighbours seek to mend ties after unprecedented tit-for-tat military strikes in January.

“The Iranian president is accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said, adding the group also includes the foreign minister and other senior officials.

Mr Raisi will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials, besides visiting the eastern city of Lahore and southern port city of Karachi, it added.

Pakistan and Iran have a history of rocky relations, with Islamabad being historically closer to Saudi Arabia and the US.
