An Iranian missile has been intercepted over Lebanese airspace for the first time, three senior security sources have told the Reuters news agency.
A foreign naval vessel was responsible for the interception earlier today, two of the sources said.
No details were given on what the missile was targeting.
Lebanon’s national news agency reported shrapnel from an interception had landed over a series of towns north of the capital Beirut, leaving some civilians lightly wounded.
For context: Iran has fired retaliatory strikes at countries across the Gulf region since being attacked by the US and Israel on 28 February.
However, Lebanon has escaped Iranian strikes so far, largely because Israel is attacking Hezbollah, the Tehran-backed militant group, across much of the country.
It’s possible the Iranian strike was targeting Israeli forces in Lebanon, though that’s not been confirmed.
As we’ve been reporting today, Israel has announced its intention to occupy much of Lebanon’s south.
