Iran War, Day 73: What to know

  • US and Iran deadlocked: Donald Trump has said he has the “best ever plan” to end the war and called Tehran’s own peace proposal, which he rejected yesterday, “garbage” and “stupid”. The US president also said the ceasefire was “on life support” and claimed Iran went back on an agreement to give up its nuclear material;
  • Details revealed: According to Iranian media, Tehran’s proposal included a demand for war damage compensation, as well as an end to the US blockade in the Strait of Hormuz with no further attacks and a lifting of sanctions;
  • Iran hits back: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the country’s parliamentary speaker, said Iran was ready to defend itself. Earlier, foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei claimed Iran’s proposal was “generous and responsible” and Washington continued to put forward “unreasonable demands”;
  • Strait of Hormuz warning for UK: Iran warned that the potential deployment of British and French warships in the Strait of Hormuz would be an “escalation of the crisis”. The UK and France are due to host a meeting of defence ministers tomorrow over a possible plan to protect shipping in the strait once the war ends;
  • Israel’s Washington ‘reset’: Benjamin Netanyahu has said he wants to wean Israel off US military support within a decade and “reset” its relationship with Washington.
