IRAN: Regional groups act ‘at their own discretion’

Regional militant groups act at their “own discretion” when responding to “American aggression”, the Iranian intelligence minister has said. 

Amid accusations Tehran was involved or ordered yesterday’s attack on US personnel in Syria, Esmail Khatib repeated the long-maintained Iranian stance that it is not responsible for the actions of its proxies. 

Iran has backed, funded and trained several proxy groups across the Middle East region to varying degrees, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions based in Syria and Iraq.
