Iran marks revolution anniversary; Protesters burn US, Israeli flags as tensions continue to rise

Thousands of people in Iran have taken to the streets to mark the 45th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Streets and squares were decorated with flags, balloons and banners carrying revolutionary and religious slogans.

US and Israeli flags were also burned.

Some in Tehran were seen to shout and carry placards saying “death to America”, as tensions between the countries continue to rise following US strikes on Iran-aligned groups across the Middle East.

Iran has backed, funded, and trained several proxy groups across the Middle East region to varying degrees, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions based in Syria and Iraq.
