Police in India have arrested four men who are alleged to have drugged and raped an American tourist earlier this year. The victim was attacked inside her hotel room in one of New Delhi’s five-star hotels.
The American woman was part of a tour group which visited India in April this year.
She believes her bottled water was tainted with sedatives before the tour guide and another four men took turns on her. The attack lasted two days in her hotel room.
After the horrific experience, she contacted an American charity organization through which a police report was filed.
Police in India launched a formal investigation soon after the case file was opened earlier this month, AFP reported.
A representative for Delhi police, Dependra Pathak, told the news outlet: “We arrested four of them a few hours ago. And they, as in the tour guide, driver, cleaner and another hotel employee, have been charged with rape.
“We are interrogating four persons while the fifth accused still has to be identified and arrested,” he said.
While justice is yet to be served, the rape victim has already visited India once again to record her testimony. She arrived Delhi last week for proper court proceedings and will be leaving shortly after identifying the rapists.
One of the culprits is said to be a 25-year-old bell boy at the five-star hotel.
The American lady said during her interview that she lost memory of the sexual assault for nearly three months. It never occurred to her that she had been raped while in India until a few months later.
“The first two nights I was drugged, physically assaulted and sexually assaulted,” she told NDTV while hiding her face with a scarf.
“I had no memory of what happened to me while I was in India. I regained my memory three months later around the end of July and that’s when I took action”.
The rape victim claims her attackers made a video of the incident and threatened they would make it public if she ever reports them to police.
A report from ABC News says the alleged rapists have denied all charges against them.
Violence against women in India has been on the rise, constantly sparking controversies within and outside the country.
Reports confirm that a 35-year-old Japanese tourist was raped in the southern part of India last month. A total of five rapists were also jailed for life in 2014 after they sexually assaulted a 52-year-old female tourist from Denmark.
“72 women are raped every 24 hours in India,” Parivarthan wrote.
