NEW DELHI – June 29, 2026, saw a flurry of significant activity across India, spanning high-level diplomacy, domestic governance, energy security, and extreme weather management, showcasing the nation’s multi-faceted resilience.
Diplomatic Front: Strengthening Ties with Seychelles, Denial of Informal Talks with Pakistan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day state visit to Seychelles concluded today, yielding a raft of tangible outcomes. PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles. During the visit, both sides exchanged several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements covering the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), health, agriculture, shipping, space cooperation, extradition, and the extension of credit lines. PM Modi stated that the outcomes of the visit would significantly enhance bilateral friendship. On the final day of his trip, he visited the Navasakti Vinayagar Temple in Victoria and met with the local Indian diaspora.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of External Affairs categorically denied reports of a “Track-II” dialogue between India and Pakistan on the sidelines of a security conference in Sri Lanka. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified that such interactions are neither new nor recognized by the Indian government, and that there is no official participation, support, or endorsement involved.
Economy & Energy: Successful Handling of the Hormuz Crisis, Stock Market Under Pressure
On the energy security front, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri revealed today that India successfully removed over 12 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessels from the Strait of Hormuz without paying any transit fees, despite the strait being closed for nearly four months. The government implemented a series of emergency measures, including swiftly reconfiguring refinery setups to boost LPG production (from 35,000 metric tonnes to 54,000 metric tonnes per day), diversifying crude oil import sources, opening new LPG supply channels from Algeria, Japan, Canada, and the United States, and cutting central excise duty by ₹10 per liter. Minister Puri emphasized that these measures ensured no domestic supply shortages, and that Indian consumers paid less for energy during this crisis than consumers in any other country globally.
However, geopolitical tensions continued to weigh on financial markets. India’s benchmark equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, closed lower today amid renewed hostilities between the US and Iran and rising oil prices. The Sensex fell 372.10 points (0.48%) to close at 76,728.37, while the Nifty dropped 109.75 points (0.46%) to settle at 23,946.25.
On the policy front, the Union Cabinet approved an additional infusion of ₹3,000 crore into the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) to set up a new fund. This brings the government’s total commitment to the fund to ₹6,000 crore. The new “NIIF Infrastructure Fund-II,” with a targeted corpus of nearly ₹3,000 crore, will focus on investments in transportation, energy, digital infrastructure, urban infrastructure, and electric mobility.
Domestic Affairs & Weather: Assam Grapples with Severe Floods, Heavy Rain Alerts Issued
On the domestic front, the Dhemaji district of Assam is reeling from severe flooding. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke over the phone today with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assess the situation and assured him of all possible assistance from the central government. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the floods have impacted 69 villages across four revenue circles in the district, affecting nearly 16,000 people. The heavy downpours have also damaged a railway bridge, suspending train services on the Murkongselek-Silapathar route.
Regarding weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “Orange Alert” for the Northeast, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for tomorrow. Simultaneously, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days.
