ICYMI: Kremlin rejects reports Assad’s wife seeking divorce – protests in Slovakia over PM’s bromance with Putin

In case you missed it, Moscow has denied claims Bashar al Assad’s wife is seeking a divorce and a route out of Russia, where the couple are staying.

The deposed Syrian dictator has been in the Russian capital with Asma al Assad since rebels forced him out of power in a lightning offensive earlier this month.

They had to leave their life of luxury behind in a hurry – with their abandoned home explored by Sky News – and reports suggest Asma has grown disillusioned.

Turkish and Arabic media claimed the 49-year-old, who was born in Britain and has a UK passport, wants a divorce and to leave Russia – possibly for a return to London.

It’s also said they are confined to Moscow and had their assets frozen, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today the reports “do not correspond to reality”.

‘It smells like treason’ – Demonstrators in Slovakia protest after PM’s Putin visit

Protests have been held in Slovakia’s capital city after the country’s prime minister met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow yesterday.

People held signs of support for Ukraine in Bratislava and banners criticising Robert Fico, with one banner reading: “It smells like treason.”

A Kremlin spokesman said talks between Putin and Fico were expected to focus on “the international situation” and Russian natural gas deliveries.
