EU humanitarian aid ship heads to Gaza

An EU ship carrying humanitarian aid left for Gaza on Friday, the European Commission president has said. 

Ursula von der Leyen said the ship, belonging to Spain’s Open Arms charity, will make a pilot voyage to test the recently announced maritime corridor – you can read about iit in our earlier post. 

It has been waiting at Cyprus’s port of Larnaca for permission to deliver food aid from World Central Kitchen, a US charity founded by celebrity chef Jose Andres, she added. 

She said the EU, together with the US, the United Arab Emirates and other involved partner countries were launching the sea corridor to deliver large quantities of aid. 

Efforts to dramatically ramp up deliveries have signalled growing frustration across Europe and the United States with Israel’s conduct in the war.

Yesterday, US President Joe Biden announced a plan to open an offshore port to help deliver aid. 

Israel accuses Hamas of commandeering some aid deliveries.
