How US and Canada intercepted Chinese-Russian bombers flying near Alaska

The North American Aerospace Defence Command has intercepted Russian and Chinese military aircraft flying near Alaska.

According to the Russian defence ministry, the bombers were carrying out joint air patrols over the waters of the Chukchi and Bering Seas as well as the North Pacific.

The US and Canada, which together make up the North American Aerospace Defence Command, or NORAD, intercepted four bombers.

NORAD said the aircraft had remained in international airspace and were “not seen as a threat”.

Russian Tu-95ms strategic missile carriers and Chinese Hun-6k strategic bombers joined the patrol, flanked by Su-30sm and Su-35s fighter jets.

At some stages of the route the air group was accompanied by fighter jets from foreign countries, the Russian military said, without providing any details.

The defence ministry claims the patrol was held as part of the Russian-Chinese military cooperation plan for this year and is not aimed against third countries.
