HOUSTON, July 9, 2026 — A fatal shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston has prompted calls for an independent investigation after federal authorities said an officer acted in self-defense during an attempted immigration arrest.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when ICE agents approached 52-year-old Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an enforcement operation. According to federal officials, Araujo allegedly attempted to evade arrest and drove his vehicle toward an ICE officer, leading the officer to open fire.

Officials described the shooting as an act of “self-defense.”

Araujo was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have launched investigations into the incident to determine whether the use of force complied with federal law and agency procedures.

Relatives of the deceased have strongly disputed the government’s account, insisting Araujo was a hardworking construction worker who posed no threat to law enforcement officers. The shooting comes amid intensified immigration enforcement operations across the United States under the Trump administration, with advocacy groups expressing growing concern over the increasing number of fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers.
