Graham Platner Ends Maine Senate Campaign Following Wave of Allegations

MAINE, July 9, 2026 — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has announced that he is ending his campaign for Maine’s closely watched Senate race after a series of controversies culminated in a recent sexual assault allegation, which he has firmly denied. His withdrawal leaves Democrats searching for a new challenger to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in one of the party’s key Senate contests.

Platner revealed his decision in a video message, saying the continued focus on allegations against him had become too damaging for both his campaign and the broader political movement he hoped to represent.

“For the movement to continue, it can’t be me,” Platner said.

The candidate insisted that the accusations made against him were false and rejected suggestions that his withdrawal amounted to an admission of wrongdoing.

“They’re all false,” Platner said while maintaining his innocence.

His campaign had already been under intense scrutiny following reports about controversial social media activity, past personal conduct, and other allegations involving former partners. The latest accusation, involving an alleged sexual assault, triggered widespread calls from Democratic leaders and supporters for him to leave the race. Platner has consistently denied the allegations.

Following his announcement, the Maine Democratic Party began preparations to choose a replacement nominee. Under state election law, the party has until late July to formally select another candidate, provided Platner completes the required withdrawal process within the legal deadline.

Several Democrats are reportedly considering entering the race, including former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson and other prominent party figures. The contest remains one of the Democrats’ best opportunities to challenge Collins during the 2026 midterm elections.

Despite ending his campaign, Platner criticized members of the Democratic establishment, suggesting that party leaders had abandoned him as the controversy intensified. He also called for a fair and transparent process to determine who should replace him on the ballot.

Political analysts say Platner’s exit dramatically reshapes the Maine Senate race, forcing Democrats to quickly unite behind a new nominee while attempting to regain momentum ahead of the November election.
