Gaza school sheltering thousands of people damaged in ‘close proximity strike’

A school run by a relief organisation in Gaza has been damaged in a “close proximity strike”, the UN Palestinian refugee agency has said.

The facility in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza near the border with Egyptm has been sheltering 4,600 people, the UNRWA added.

In a post on X, it said it had “sustained severe collateral damage”.

One person was killed and 44 were injured, including nine children, it said.

The strike comes after the organisation warned it would be forced to “significantly reduce” or stop its humanitarian operations in the region if it does not urgently receive fuel.

“Fuel is urgently needed to continue the UNRWA lifesaving humanitarian operations,” it said.

“If fuel is not received into Gaza, UNRWA will be forced to significantly reduce and in some cases bring its humanitarian operations across the Gaza Strip to a halt. The coming 24 hours are very critical.”

Israel ‘agrees to delay invasion’ of Gaza so US can rush missile defences to region

Israel has agreed to delay the invasion of Gaza for now so the US can rush missile defences to the region, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing US and Israeli officials.

According to the news outlet, the Pentagon is working to deploy nearly a dozen air defence systems to protect US troops from missiles and rockets.

“US officials have so far persuaded the Israelis to hold off until those pieces can be placed, as early as later this week,” it said.

Israel is also taking into account the effort to supply humanitarian aid to civilians inside Gaza, as well as diplomatic efforts to free hostages held by Hamas militants, the report said.
