Matthijs de Ligt, who recently joined Juventus, has explained his choice for the famed Italian club side.
The former Ajax player said he preferred Juventus for their old-school defending, adding that his idols at the club include Maldini, Scirea and Nesta, among others.
Professing his affection for Cristiano Ronaldo’s current club, Matthijs de Ligt said it wasn’t difficult to reject offers from other clubs as soon as Juventus showed interest. The 19-year-old was previously linked to Barcelona.
Speaking in his first interview since the big-money endorsement by the Old Lady, he told Ajax TV: ‘I had a tough time…The options were many and very attractive so it was difficult to choose the best.’
Matthijs de Ligt continued, ‘I am a fan of Italian football. I love how they defend and this is the main reason I chose Juventus.
‘Many of my idols and references are Italians…I love Baresi, too. The list is endless,” the Dutchman added.
