First official statement from UK Military of Defence after the bomb threat in Plymouth

‘One of the largest peacetime evacuations since WWII’

The Ministry of Defence has called the transportation of the unexploded bomb one of the largest peacetime evacuation operations in the UK since the Second World War.

Military personnel have been working in Plymouth to assist in the evacuation of residents since police were alerted the device had been dug up this week.

Resident’s family ‘stuck at bomb site’ as evacuation turns to ‘organised chaos’

The evacuation turned into “organized chaos” earlier today after the roads were closed half an hour earlier than expected, a resident has told UK reporters.

He said his family was stuck within the “bomb site”, with nobody able “to get in or out”.

The man said he had received emails telling him the roads would close at 2pm, but they were shut at 1.30pm.

“I am absolutely fuming. My family is stuck in there and there’s two people here saying I’m not allowed in.”

‘Spirits high’ as school evacuates

A headteacher in Plymouth has described her pride at how “everyone came together” to evacuate the school ahead of this afternoon’s bomb transport.

Only two students were left at Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School, which is located within the 300m exclusion zone around the convoy’s route, said Sarah Rowe.

“It’s something that could have been so scary and negative but I have been so proud of how everyone has come together,” said Ms Rowe.

She said that until now, the school had been offering food to some of the 3,000 people evacuated earlier this week.

“The whole school family has come together to make sure everyone is safe – spirits are high.”
