Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday on corruption charges, including the sale of government appointments, according to live court footage.
The Seoul Central District Court handed down the sentence, stating that Kim had “unhesitatingly received luxury goods that are practically unattainable for ordinary people.”
The independent counsel team led by Min Joong-ki, which investigated corruption allegations involving the former first couple, had sought a 7.5-year term for Kim over charges of trading public offices for high-priced jewelry and luxury items. Kim’s defense team is reportedly planning to appeal the ruling.
Prosecutors alleged that Kim accepted a necklace, brooch, and earrings from a businessman between March and May 2022 in exchange for securing a government post for the businessman’s eldest son-in-law. She was also charged with taking a gold turtle from a former head of the national education commission in April 2022 in return for an appointment request, along with a wristwatch from a robot dog entrepreneur that September in exchange for business favors. Additional charges included receiving a designer bag from a pastor between June and September 2022, and a painting from a former prosecutor in February 2023 in return for a nomination request.
Kim, who was indicted and detained in August 2025, became the first wife of a former South Korean president to stand trial while in custody. The Seoul High Court had previously overturned a lower court ruling in April, increasing her sentence from 20 months to four years on charges including stock price manipulation and graft.
Separately, Kim was also indicted on charges of requesting the mass enrollment of Unification Church members in the then-ruling People Power Party to support a specific candidate for party leadership ahead of the party’s national convention in 2023.
