EU adopts resolution against Russian oppression after Navalny’s death

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution against oppression in Russia following the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

The resolution passed with 506 votes in favour and nine against, while 32 members abstained.

The resolution condemns Mr Navalny’s death in a remote Arctic penal colony earlier this month and holds the Russian government and Vladimir Putin responsible.

It also calls on Russia to repeal its “oppressive legislation” and expresses solidarity with Russians who “still find the courage to speak the truth” despite “purposefully brutal repression” in the country.

Mr Navalny’s widow Yulia Navalnaya addressed the parliament yesterday as she urged members to stand up to Mr Putin, whom she called a “bloody mobster”.
