Erdogan: Turkey rejects plans to create buffer zone in Gaza

Turkey has rejected plans to create a buffer zone in Gaza after the war, the country’s president has told reporters.

Tayyip Erdogan said such a plan would be “disrespectful” to Palestinians and Israel must return the territories it occupies.

Reuters reported last week that Israel had conveyed plans for the buffer zone to several Arab states and Turkey.

Speaking to reporters on a flight returning from Qatar, Mr Erdogan said Gaza’s future would be decided by the Palestinian people, according to broadcaster Haberturk.

He also warned Israel would pay a “heavy price” if it tries to hunt down Hamas members in Turkey.

Mr Erdogan has been a vocal critic of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to him as the “butcher of Gaza” and calling for him to be tried for war crimes.
