Downing Street blames ‘radical Iran-backed militant groups’ for attack on US troops

As we’ve been reporting, three American troops were killed and 34 were injured in a drone attack in Jordan yesterday.

Those killed in the attack were sleeping in a tent at a place called Tower 22 in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border, and some of those injured are being evacuated from the country.

US President Joe Biden said the attack was carried out by “radical Iran-backed militant groups” in Syria and Iraq on Saturday night.

Asked about the attack, Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson said the UK agrees with the US assessment.

He would not comment on any potential US response, but said: “We will stand with our US allies in our continued and shared fight against terrorism.”

Amid fears of growing instability in the region, the spokesperson said: “One of our key priorities has been to ensure regional stability.

“It’s why the foreign secretary has been in the region, it’s why we have are working with our US allies as part of the taskforce to protect commercial shipping with HMS Diamond continuing to play a vital role.”

The spokesperson added the US is “continuing to use all our capabilities, diplomatic and otherwise, to de-escalate tensions in the region and that work will continue”.
