Your starting point
The human mind was created with the power to literally achieve anything it conceives. So, everyone—including you—has great potentials to achieve more than the world’s greatest in different fields of endeavour.
Like diamonds in the dirt, many people are yet to discover themselves while others are waiting for adequate resources and the right time to fulfil their God-ordained destinies. But there’s no right time—except now. Wise people separate themselves from the crowd by starting with the little they already have—skills, knowledge and time, which is money.
To get anywhere in life, you must launch from somewhere or you will get nowhere. Many times, we tend to ignore the things we can do and focus more on things we cannot do thereby limiting our chances of productivity and growth. Just as Teddy Roosevelt said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
Can you just wake up one morning and contest for the office of the President? No, right? You have to start somewhere—from the grassroot, anywhere! Climbing a ladder usually starts with a first step from the bottom, then you proceed—one step at a time—until you get to the top. Moving forward is all that matters. Doing something instead of waiting for success like an elevator or a free ride is the key to achieving your life goals. There’s no free meal even in Freetown.
Henri Amiel observed, “Almost everything comes from nothing.” Many of the successful people you see today started from somewhere; their homes, churches or unrecognized neighbourhoods. You don’t know how far you can go until you try, so take your time and don’t lose hope in your most challenging situations. Don’t be afraid to fail; instead, believe in yourself, stay focused and fight harder. Success wouldn’t be sweet without the challenges.
Do you have impressive football skills? Start from your school or play on the street with friends. If you are waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo to visit your locality and discover those talents, then you might be waiting for the rest of your life. Learn everything you can—no knowledge is a waste; do what you love, so you don’t enrich the grave with your invaluable innate gifts.
There is always a starting point. Don’t be among those who wait for everything to get comfortable and rosy before they start. You want to own a business centre? Don’t wait till you have that big office space, numerous desktops, photocopying machines, coloured printers etc. You can start with just a desktop, a photocopier and a UPS. The journey of a million miles starts with a step, according to Chinese business tycoon, Jack Ma. It’s all about decisions.
In conclusion, use what’s available to get the desired. If you have all it takes to start……fantastic! Go ahead. But if you don’t have, stay strong and keep your head up. There’s always a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Look closely, there’s always something to begin with. Edward Hail said, ” I cannot do everything but I still can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
