Legendary college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale has received some encouraging news in his ongoing fight against cancer.

The 87-year-old Hall of Fame announcer took to social media Wednesday to share that his recent blood tests came back “very good” and that the immunotherapy treatments he’s been receiving are proving “very effective in wiping out the cancer.”

It’s the latest chapter in a health journey that has tested Vitale’s resilience like never before. His first cancer diagnosis came in 2021 with melanoma, followed by lymphoma. After being declared cancer-free, he learned in 2023 that he had vocal cord cancer. Then came lymph node cancer in 2024, which required surgery.

Through it all, Vitale has remained the same energetic, passionate presence that college basketball fans have loved for decades. He received the Jimmy V Award for perseverance in 2022—a fitting honor named for his late friend and fellow broadcaster Jim Valvano, who died from cancer in 1993.

Vitale has long been a tireless fundraiser for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the organization Valvano helped found before his death.

The 87-year-old made a few appearances on ESPN broadcasts last season but has not yet announced his plans for the upcoming campaign. For now, though, the focus remains on his health—and this week’s news is exactly what his countless fans wanted to hear.
