The blowing up of Hezbollah pagers and walkie-talkies was a “very sophisticated, very accurate” attack, an Israeli intelligence expert says.
Major Avraham Levine, from the Alma Center, tells Sky News the “blame was immediately put on Israel” and the “surgical” strike suggests “someone is deep into Hezbollah’s communications systems”.
It was assumed the blasts were the “opening move for a ground manoeuvre”, he says, “but we obviously see that was not happening.”
Instead, “it seems like it was an isolated attack on the beepers of Hezbollah and their walkie-talkies”, but he notes: “Israel has been retaliating in a very measured way to Hezbollah’s attack – seeing a very different attack obviously raises questions.”
The explosions killed two children, which Major Levine says “is always a sad event”, but adds: “If Hamas and Hezbollah wouldn’t use their people as human shields, less children would be hit.”
He adds: “I can say from my experience, we go to great lengths of process and trial and error to try and hit only our targets, only the enemy, and not civilians that are there, by chance, but as you said, sometimes things go wrong.”
Israel will face ‘crushing response’, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards commander says
