Davey: ‘Hatred like this has no place in Britain’

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the government to do more to tackle antisemitism following the stabbing of two Jewish people.

“Horrifying news from North London. My heart goes out to the victims, their loved ones and the whole Jewish community,” he said.

“Hatred like this has no place in Britain.

“The government must do more to keep Jewish communities safe and confront antisemitism wherever it appears.”

Police to remain at scene ‘for some time’ and offer reassurance

The Met’s head of counter terrorism policing has said police are “working quickly to understand what happened”.

“Thank you to those who were in the area at the time and supported the response to this terrible incident,” Laurence Taylor said.

Meanwhile, Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in the area, said he was “aware of the significant distress and concern this incident is likely to cause in the face of a number of incidents in the local area”.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrific attack. We are grateful to officers who swiftly Tasered and arrested the suspect before he could cause further harm,” he said.

“Officers will remain at the scene for some time to carry out further enquiries, speak to local people and offer reassurance,” said DCI Williams.

One man stabbed outside shops and another outside synagogue, resident says
