Johnson ‘can’t answer’ if ministers’ decision-making led to more deaths
Boris Johnson is asked whether, with hindsight, he believes the government could have done better in its COVID response.
Mr Johnson says the answer is that “with hindsight, it may be easy to see things that we could have done differently” but “at the time, I felt that we were doing our best in very difficult circumstances to protect life and protect the NHS”.
He is then asked if he believes governmental decision-making led to a greater number of excess deaths in the UK.
“I can’t give you the answer to that question,” Mr Johnson says. “I’m not sure.”
He stresses that “many other countries suffered terrible losses from COVID”, adding that our data was similar to that noted across Europe.
However, he admits this is “no comfort” to the bereaved.
“That seems to be the statistical reality.”
