A 15-year-old child bride identified as Derya B., who went into labor in Turkey’s Mutki district, has died after suffering a brain haemorrhage while giving birth.
Derya died on 13 October, reports confirm.
The girl from Mutki district of the eastern province of Bitlis gave birth at a private hospital but suffered a medical emergency soon afterwards. Medical personnel battled to save her life in intensive care for two days before she passed away.
Derya got married in a religious marriage about a year ago but details on her husband’s age is unknown.
According to reports, the underage mom safely gave birth to a baby boy but suffered severe headache, nausea and vomiting.
Medical experts say Derya died as a result of giving birth at a very young age. The teen mom’s body was sent to the Batman Regional Public Hospital for an autopsy.
Prosecutors in Turkey have set up a panel of inquiry to investigate her death. The young girl’s father and her alleged husband – the prime suspects – will face interrogations.
Gynaecology expert Prof MD Aydan Biri told Hurriyet Daily News that the girl’s death was likely to have been caused by her going through childbirth at such a young age.
“It is dangerous for a child bride to get pregnant. The mortality rate is higher in adolescent pregnancies. The risks of high blood pressure, early birth or an intervention in the birth are higher. The pregnancies of children who have not completed their physical development and whose organs have not yet completely developed often end in death,” said Biri.
