Ceasefire must take hold in Lebanon before talks begin, Iran says

Iran’s parliamentary speaker has insisted fighting must stop in Lebanon before US-Iran peace talks get under way.

Alongside the release of Iran’s “blocked assets”, a ceasefire in Lebanon must be implemented before any discussions, scheduled to take place in Pakistan tomorrow, are held, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf posted on X.

“These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin,” he said.

The global release of Iranian assets was part of the 10-point plan proposed by Iran – shared by Iranian state media – that was rejected by the US.

JD Vance, who is leading the US delegation for the talks, has already departed for Pakistan (see 13:54 post).

Ghalibaf warned yesterday that ceasefire violations “carry explicit costs and STRONG responses”.

13 Lebanese security personnel killed in Israeli strikes – as IDF troops are injured in region

More than a dozen Lebanese security personnel have been killed in Israeli strikes on the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, the country’s presidential office has said.

President Joseph Aoun said Israel’s targeting of state institutions and security apparatus in the country “will not deter Lebanon from clinging to its right to protect its land and preserve its sovereignty”, in a statement posted on X.

While Israel has continued to launch strikes into Lebanon in its fight against Hezbollah, despite the US-Iran ceasefire agreement, it has also suffered its own casualties.

The Israel Defence Forces said one of its reservist officers was severely injured and another soldier was lightly injured after an explosive drone fell near the soldiers in southern Lebanon earlier today.
