Canada pledges to grant temporary visas to 5,000 Gaza residents

Temporary visas will be granted to 5,000 Gaza residents who have relatives in Canada, if they are able to leave the Palestinian enclave in the future.

“While movement out of Gaza is not currently possible, the situation may change at any time,” said immigration minister Marc Miller, announcing the preparatory move. 

Canada earlier said it would grant 1,000 temporary resident visas but it has now upped this number. 

It has been sharing the names of Gaza residents who have passed preliminary screening to local authorities to secure their exit, Mr Miller said.
