The Armenian international had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford recently. Reports say that although there has been no official confirmation from United, Dortmund have gone ahead to released a statement saying the 27-year-old will leave this summer.
It read: “The paths of Borussia Dortmund and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan separate from this summer. BVB has complied, after intensive discussions, with the wish of the Armenian national team member to join Manchester United.
“Based on a completely new situation, this transfer was a difficult trade-off for us. Had we refused it, the player would have left us on a free transfer in 2017 and we would have only delayed the matter of a replacement by a year.”
