Joe Biden has said he is “surging every federal resource possible” to tackle the LA fires.

In a post on X, the US president said that included hundreds of federal firefighters, 30 firefighting helicopters and planes, and 500 military ground-clearing personnel.

In a separate post, he said the federal government would cover “100% of the cost of measures to protect lives and property in southern California for six months”.

Mr Biden added: “I’ve told the governor and officials to spare no expense and do whatever they need to contain the fires and protect families.”

Latest fire investigated as possible arson after locals detain suspect

The latest fire in LA is being investigated as a possible arson, it is understood.

A number of citizens detained someone in the West Valley area, close to where the flames are burning.

Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department are looking into whether that individual was responsible for the Kenneth fire, Sky News’s US affiliate, NBC, is reporting.

Detectives are also looking into possible connections with other fires in the area.

Progress of Kenneth fire ‘stopped’

The “forward progress” of the Kenneth fire has been “stopped”, the Ventura County Fire Department has said.

The flames are covering almost 1,000 acres and containment is 0%, it added.

About 400 firefighters were due to be there overnight on Thursday.

Number of dead rises to 10

The number of deaths caused by the fires has risen to 10, the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s department has said.

That was by 9pm California time on Thursday.

The victims are yet to be officially identified.
